Trucking insurance wholesalers: agent guide

Build a trucking shortlist by distinguishing the wholesaler, program and issuing carrier, then check market access before submitting.

Separate the company from the program

A familiar company name is a starting point, not a complete placement decision. Record three things for each option: the company receiving the submission, the specific program being considered and the insurer expected to issue the policy. A wholesale group can have several teams with different requirements. Multiple access routes can also lead to the same insurer. Treating every route as a different carrier makes a shopping list look larger than it really is.

Make one account brief before shopping

Use the same facts for each conversation so you can compare answers. Keep unknown information visibly pending instead of filling it with an assumption. This is an organizing checklist, not a universal carrier application.

  • Garaging state, operating states, lanes and maximum radius
  • Freight, vehicle types, owned units and owner-operator units
  • Authority history, business experience and expected fleet growth
  • Requested coverage, limits, effective date and available loss information

Confirm the route to the underwriter

Ask whether your agency can submit directly, needs an appointment or should work through the listed wholesale contact. Confirm the exact program, any market-access restrictions and who will receive follow-up questions. Keep a note when two contacts offer the same insurer. Do not assume a broad company-level territory map establishes eligibility for every program below it.

Compare evidence, not just a fit score

Open the relevant program and its current brochure or application. Compare state restrictions, fleet limits, ineligible operations and submission requirements against the account brief. A listing without state evidence belongs on a confirmation list, not a confirmed placement list. Record the source date and the representative's answer. An initial indication is not a bindable quote unless the underwriter has explicitly confirmed that status.

Keep the shortlist useful at renewal

Record which route you used, which insurer was considered and why an option was declined or held for clarification. That gives the next review a useful starting point without treating last year's appetite as current. In Carrierlens, use the company profile to inspect the individual programs and attached files; keep any unresolved question with the program it concerns.

Official sources and scope

This is a Carrierlens workflow guide, not a quote or a carrier underwriting manual. The source examples below were checked on September 10, 2026. Confirm current eligibility and policy terms with the selected market.

  • Amwins: transportation solutions

An example of a wholesale group describing separate brokerage, small-fleet and in-house transportation capabilities. It is not evidence that a particular account qualifies.

  • Northland: trucking insurance

Northland's official trucking page directs agents to a general agent, illustrating why the access route should be checked separately from the insurer name.
